Kullamaa church was built in the immediate vicinity of the former ancient fortress around 1300, the neo-Gothic tower was built in 1869. Three prayers from 1525 were found at the end of the Kullamaa vacancy book, being the oldest records in Estonian. In the churchyard there is a wheel cross with the text “Sitta Kodt Matz” – a tombstone for a local peasant, who became rich by picking horse beans and bought himself free.
