Hanila church was built after the completion of Karuse church. The purpose of the church was to guard the road and branch roads passing through the lands of the Order. Belfry was built in 1857-1959. During the restoration of the church, trapezoidal tombstones with pagan symbols from the 13th century were found in the floor. Church has one of the oldest weathervanes in Estonia (1652).
