One of the oldest churches in mainland Estonia is Karuse Church, which was built by the Livonian Order as a fortress church in the 1260s. The church belfry used to be located separately, the current western tower was built in 1858-1859. Several tombstones from the early days of the church have been preserved in the churchyard.
